Overcoming 9 of the biggest obstacles in sales

1. “How do I overcome procrastination?”

Recognize what is at stake. This can be financial freedom, leaving a job, sending your children to a private school. Set a daily goal or goals and then withhold something important from yourself until you accomplish that goal. For example Barbra had a Friday night date night with her family every week. She said…. “If I do not book 2 appointments for next week, I cannot go on my Friday date night with the family this week.” Being a huge procrastinator Barbra would inevitably book her two appointments for the following week between 3-5pm Friday afternoon… then off she went to her 5pm Friday date night.

2. “I feel that I’m not a salesperson”

Lead with yourself and not the product. The key is not your product, it’s solving a problem and showing your client “what’s in it for them”. Paint a picture of their better future.

3. “How Do Handle Rejection!?”

You have to know exactly what it is you are determined to achieve and accomplish. Also, recognize rejection as interest.

TECHNIQUE: Excellent! Sounds like I’ve created interest.

TECHNIQUE: Imagine you’re a flight attendant offering everyone coffee. Some of the passengers say yes. Some say no thanks. Just because you get a few NOs … don’t continue down the isle of the plane and jump out the back! They’re saying no to the coffee not you.

RESPONSE: I understand this isn’t the right time/answer for you now. May I call you in 60 days to let you know how business is going for me and hear how it’s going for you?

I’ve never had anyone say no to that…. Welcome to a guaranteed follow up. Put it in your calendar and call them because 60% of all business is written on the 5th follow up.

4. “How do I keep my recruits excited?”

Create a bridge by sharing with them your dream and desires to why you are seeking financial freedom, building your business, or whatever your goals may be. And be sure they share with you what their desires are and why they are seeking financial freedom. Social events are great too. Create a Picnic Event or other social mixer once a month where everyone gathers to recall their exciting and funny business moments for the month or everyone brings their family to relax and be social. In addition creating fun competitions and contests with prizes and recognition is a HUGE motivator and creates BIG excitement! Recognition is key!

5. “How do I handle intimidation?”

Be firm on your vision and goals – put them in front of you at your desk. Take a picture of yourself in your next car, your next home, or have a photo of your kids in front of the private school or superimpose a photo of the family onto a cruise ship photo. Print a check and write it out to yourself.

TECHNIQUE: I’m a fear demolishing champion! FEAR stands for False Evidence Appearing Real. 9 times out of 10 the intimidation you feel is false, it’s just something you’ve made up in your head. What a waist of brain-time by the way. So go DO IT ANYWAY…. and see what happens afterward. You’ll laugh and breath a sigh of relief and you’ll be happy because most likely you’ll come away with one of two things. You will have become better at that action or you will have made a sale!

6. “How should I be presenting?”

Speak for 20 minutes – allow 20 minutes to answer questions, objections and close.

TECHNIQUE: Take notes as you watch great presenters!  I watch info-commercials… you’ll discover some of the BEST presentation tips, again take notes. TECHNIQUE: Be a little more excited then you usually are. Make it all about them and their needs and highlight their favorite parts. Paint their future picture for them.

7. “How do I handle the objection, ‘I’m interested but I don’t have the money’

TECHNIQUE: You must build the value.

“Money aside, you’ve said you’re interested. Right?”

“Not having money is a big motivator to say yes today. As you begin earning income right away you will never have to say the words “I don’t have the money” again.

If I could show you a way to earn x # of dollars in the next two weeks, would that help you make a decision to come on board today?”

“With my expertise and your contacts there’s zero room for failure. So let’s turn your contact base into a profit stream asap.  What name would you like your checks written out?  And what address would you like your checks sent to?….”  Look at you you’re closing!

8. “How much are you making?”

This is a question that may indicate doubt regarding your personal success. Speak confidently, dress sharply, chose high-end locations to present in (IE: in the lobby of a fancy hotel) and always, always “act as if”  you are earning six figures.

TECHNIQUE: “I’m on track to earn ____ within the next 6 months with the easy duplication system we all follow.”

Share another persons income story, or even better, allow that person to share their own story with your client. A conference call where your client hears from another successful person is magical! This will show your client a bigger view of the company (it’s not just you), that there are others who are very successful, and that there is a team that provides support (one of the #1 reasons a person will not join your team is they feel they will not be supported).  Psychologically it’s the most brilliant move you can make at the end of your presentation.

9. “How do I get better at everything?”

This question stems from your need to build belief in yourself, the company and the industry. Hang out with millionaires and positive people. Hang out with those in the company who are more successful than you. Attend every meeting and training you possibly can, as soon as you can. If you attended 12 trainings in 12 days (recorded calls, on-line webinars, etc.)…. you’d be as good as the guy/gal who attended 1 training a month for 12 months.  12 trainings are 12 trainings, just commit to them. Get out of your comfort zone to develop your belief.  One of the best ways is to never ever miss a corporate event.  One of my mentors once said, “the only reason to miss a corporate event is a funeral… your own.”  Events of that magnitude catapult your growth by 50% within 90-120 days of returning from the event.  They also take 6 months off your learning curve.  It’s also great to know your competition well.  Again, it’s knowing what is at stake. I decided I wanted to work fewer hours and earn more.  I wanted to make a bigger difference in peoples lives.  I wanted to do something that was so rewarding that I smiled all the time and I made other people smile all the time too.  I wanted something that would retire me sooner – in 5 years by age 45.
